For researchers

The Forum Marinum collections are mainly accessible to all, unless specific restrictions have been put on their use. Material included in the collections can be studied by agreement in the public museum rooms. For security reasons, only museum staff are allowed to enter the storage and handling rooms of the collections. Objects from the collections are lent to other museums, whenever feasible, for example for exhibitions. Decisions on lending out objects are taken on an individual basis. We do not lend objects to private individuals.

The Forum Marinum collections are not yet available online. If you are looking for a particular type of material, please contact our experts for further information.

Lectures and seminars on our current research themes are organised regularly at Forum Marinum. A meeting for researchers into naval war history is arranged annually.

The archives and library of the Åbo Akademi Institute for Maritime History is situated on the first floor of the Linnanpuomi building. The Institute comprises over 1.3 consecutive kilometres of material on maritime history and ethnology. There are about 600 consecutive metres of literature, which can be browsed and borrowed through the Alma database. The archives contain about 80,000 photographs, extensive collections of drawings and maps, as well as the archives and logbooks of shipping companies. Researchers and private individuals can explore the material during the opening hours of the Institute. A visit should be booked in advance by contacting the staff of the Institute; contact information is found on the Institute's website.
