Sigyn – A lucky ship

Let Captain Jönsson take you along on Sigyn’s voyages and discover how marvelous the sea is!

Captain Ludvig Jönsson was the longest-serving master of the cargo ship Sigyn, which sailed across the world’s great oceans. In his diary, he wrote about his experiences on Sigyn – the joy when the trade winds carry the ship forward and the sea sparkles, but also about homesickness, cold, and storms.

Jönsson’s unique writings come to life in the multisensory exhibition “Sigyn – The Lucky Ship.” You can smell, hear, and feel the atmosphere of being at sea. Peek into the cargo boxes; can you find scrap metal or the sleeping ship’s cat Tom? Or why not settle into a hammock, get comfortable, and listen to Jönsson’s love for the sea?

“Sigyn – The Lucky Ship” explores the relationship between humans and the sea, from the past towards the future. What does our love for the sea look like, and in what condition will we leave our beloved sea behind? And what would be the best possible future for Sigyn, which cannot be preserved much longer in its current location?

This immersive exhibition is also well suited for children.

This innovative museum concept has been created in collaboration between Tehdas Teatteri and experts from Forum Marinum. Current and former students from the Arts Academy of Turku University of Applied Sciences have also participated in the production.

The production has been supported by the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation.

Experience Sigyn in the exhibition and onboard the ship:

• Sigyn – The Lucky Ship – a multisensory exhibition at Kruununmakasiini, open during the museum’s opening hours.
• The ship Sigyn is located by Varvintori square. It is open to the public during the maritime centre’s summer season and during various events.
